A week in honor of those who look after residents’ every need
“I need you to …”
These words are communicated many times each day at Hope Residence, though what follows is always different. It could be help with braiding hair, playing a game, talking through a problem, getting dressed or just a big hug.
All these needs fall on Hope’s direct support professionals (DSP). These silent ministers are the often unsung heroes of our residents. They see residents for the individuals they are and give them the love and care they need and deserve. Residents have been known to crack a big smile when they find out a favorite DSP is on the next shift.
During the week of September 13, The Lutheran Home Association (TLHA) will be celebrating our outstanding direct support professionals at Hope Residence. The week has been designated National Direct Support Professionals Week by the American Network of Community Options and Resources.
A direct support professional assists an individual with a disability in leading a self-directed life and contributing to the community. DSPs also help with activities of daily living, and encourage attitudes and behaviors that enhance community inclusion. This may include teaching residents to be more independent, offering choices, taking them out in the community or to a medical appointment or assisting with meals, transfers, therapy exercises and daily cares.
At Hope, DSPs go beyond typical job duties with their care.
“As a manager of one of Hope’s living areas, I couldn’t be more proud of the people working at Hope Residence. When I come into my area each day, my heart is warmed by the love, kindness, and patience exuded by our team in their care of the residents. We are so lucky to have such wonderful team members who live out the mission of The Lutheran Home Association.”
A fellow team member at Hope shares, “They give so much to those who live here. Every day I observe special moments between the residents and the DSPs, and it gives me a great feeling of comfort knowing they truly care about each and every person. It takes a special individual to work with individuals with developmental disabilities — requiring patience, love, compassion and a genuine concern for others. It amazes me how the DSPs are able to communicate with the residents who have communication barriers and how well they know what their needs are.”
Thank you to all the DSPs for their dedication to Hope Residence and wish them a happy National Direct Support Professionals Week! They are greatly appreciated and truly make a difference in the lives of everyone who makes Hope their home.
