Ensuring His Future: Team Member Joins Military at Young Age
John Rutherford made the decision to the join the armed forces when he was 19 years old. “I had a lot of wants at that age, but only so many resources. I made the decision for my future,” he said.
John joined the United States Army and attended basic training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, after which he attended quartermaster training at Fort Lee in Virginia. Quartermasters work in the supply field preparing equipment and materials for missions. Following training, John was stationed on a field artillery base in Germany.
After almost three years, John made the decision to leave the Army. However, he’s wasn’t done with his military career. Around six months later, John joined the Army National Guard where he remained for nearly 21 years. The National Guard allowed him to work part time, including one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer. He continued in the supply field for several years before transitioning to the anti-armor field.
John works currently at Wellhaven Senior Living as a Certified Nursing Assistant. His job responsibilities include providing basic care to tenants, as well as assisting them in daily activities they might have trouble with on their own.
“I look forward to visiting with each of our tenants, especially those [who] are also veterans,” John said.
