Hope residents thrive at camp

Hope Residence April 13, 2019

When asked about their favorite part of camp, most Hope residents simply answered “Everything.”

Eleven Hope residents attended True Friends Camp Eden Wood Day Camp in Eden Prairie. The camp is located in the woods on Birch Island Lake. Five residents attended from July 24 to 28, and six residents attended from July 31 to Aug. 4.

The True Friends organization serves 25,000 individuals annually through a variety of programs. Programs include summer and winter camps, day camp, respite weekends, wilderness trips, national and international travel, therapeutic riding, team building and volunteer and youth leadership development.

“It is a place where campers can experience the outdoors, discover their talents, make friends and grow as members of a community,” said Deb Wirt, Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator.

True Friends has a 60 plus year legacy and is Minnesota’s largest special needs camping agency.  One of their goals is to provide life-changing experiences that enhance independence and self-esteem for children and adults with disabilities.

Activities included a trip to Crayola World, arts and crafts including tie dying, finger painting, making bracelets and painting splat art; swimming at the Eden Prairie Community Center and Lake Minnewashta;  completing high ropes courses and zip lining, paddle boarding, Fetch It scavenger hunt, lip syncing, a puppet show and a talent show.

Hope residents attending camp is made possible by donations from family and friends, grant money from the Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative Round Up program, fundraising throughout the year at Hope, camp scholarships provided by True Friends and residents paying portions of the cost.

Attending camp is truly something that is a highlight of year for several Hope residents. They often talk about going to camp and look forward to the trip.
