Introducing new leadership at Kingsway

I’d like to introduce myself, my name is Joel Ulland and I joined the Kingsway team as Housing Manager in January 2020. I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know our residents, family members and fellow team members. Stop into my office and say “Hi!”
I enjoyed visiting with residents during Bible study led by Pastor Ed, Wii bowling led by Trisha and our “Donuts with the Cops” activity. Going forward, I will be writing a story for this newsletter and our monthly Kingsway e-newsletter. The winter months can lead to an increase in falls. Below are four ways to prevent falls.
1) They stress the importance of seeing your doctor on a regular basis. It is important to know what medications you are taking, both prescription and over the counter. It’s a possibly that medications could interfere each other resulting in dizziness as a side effect, which could contribute to a fall.
2) Doctors also encourage you to keep moving. Kingsway is proud to be a Live to be Healthy Certified Community. A Certified Trainer leads group exercises for both residents and community members twice a week at Kingsway. Staying active, doing seated exercises and exercise classes can promote strength, balance and reduce chances of falling. Learn more about Live to be Healthy at livetobehealthy.com.
3) While doing exercises and during everyday life, it is important to wear proper footwear. Avoid high heels, slippers and ill fitted shoes. Clutter in your living space can also pose a hazard and could greatly increase the chance of falling. Remove throw rugs, repair carpet and damaged flooring promptly.
4) Non-skid stickers or bathmats in the shower and bathtub are highly recommended. It may be a good idea to use a walker or a cane to assist with walking. This will provide extra support and enhance your balance. Handrails raised toilet seat and grab bars play an important role in fall reduction.
I hope this information was helpful. One reliable source for health topics I refer to often is the Mayo Clinic. I look forward to meeting all of you. Stay safe!
Joel, Kingsway’s new Housing Manager, would love to meet you! Stop by his office or email him at jdulland@tlha.org.
