Making the Care of the Soul the Soul of our Care

Rev. Joel Gaertner October 12, 2022

For many years now, the tagline of The Lutheran Home Association (TLHA) has been “where the care of the soul is the soul of care.”  This is more than just a nice sounding platitude; it is what drives and directs every aspect of our ministry.

While the tagline directs the board of directors and serves as their evaluation for each meeting, it is at the chaplaincy level where “the care of the soul” happens every day.  Every TLHA care community is served by a chaplain who shares the comforting message of the Gospel with not just the residents, but families and team members as well.

Many residents and families have shared that “the care of the soul” is a big part of what made them choose a TLHA care community.  They desire to have the best personal care, and they also want spiritual care and regular assurance of God’s eternal love.

The Gospel-driven work of our chaplains is not just a sporadic occasion.  Chaplains share mealtime prayers and devotions with residents, hold weekly chapel services and do one-on-one visits with residents and team members. Our chaplains have observed that it is not only families who join their loved ones for the chapel services, but often team members are within earshot seeking the reassurance of God’s Word to support and sustain their work.

One more unique aspect of “the care of the soul.”  I have had many team members share with me that the Gospel-centered culture of TLHA is what drew and kept them working within our ministry.  They have shared that it is a real joy to pray with a resident at a particularly difficult time and give Godly encouragement to those whom they care for.

Thank you for your continued support of our ministry as we strive in every way to make “the care of the soul the soul of our care.”
