Our God is an awesome God!
Romans 11:33 “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!”
As I write this devotion, Hurricane Irma is roaring north through Florida and is headed toward other states in the Southeastern US. We have a number of family and friends who are in the path of Irma and we’ve been praying for and staying in touch with them.
I don’t know about you, but as I’ve heard about the force of Irma and read our verse for this week, I thought “What does God in his wisdom and knowledge have in mind with yet another destructive hurricane affecting so many and so much in our country?”
If it’s not a hurricane, there are certainly other circumstances or situations in our lives or the lives of others which cause us to ask similar questions.

But stop and read our verse for this week again. As Paul shares with us and the Romans the words which God gave him, he is not asking any questions about how God could do this or why he does certain things. Paul is simply marveling at and rejoicing in the wisdom, knowledge and judgment of God. Paul’s words recognize that the perfect wisdom and knowledge of God is so superior to and so far above us, that there is no sense in us trying to figure out. The best thing we can do is join Paul in celebrating how awesome our God is without trying to figure him out or understand why he does things or why he allows things to happen in a certain way.
I will join you in freely admitting that it is much easier said than done to marvel at and rejoice in God, who he is and what he does. Our human nature is curious. Our sinful human nature has doubts and fears and we don’t easily just take things at face value. If we are honest, there are many times when we want to play God or at the very least give God a little advice and direction on how we think things should go.
We all know what happens when we worry, doubt or fear – we lose sleep, get distracted and often put ourselves in a funk. How much better to join Paul in marveling at and praising God for his great and then – “Let go and let God!”
