Volunteering provides chance to meet new people
Gideon Ripley looks forwards to Fridays since that’s when he volunteers at Cedar Haven.

“It’s one of the highlights of my Fridays,” he explained.
Gideon, who is studying psychology at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, learned of Cedar Haven through one of his courses during the fall semester. The course required him to volunteer within the community.
“I was looking for somewhere I could have good interactions with people,” Gideon said, “Not just small talk but an opportunity where I could get to know people.”
While visiting Cedar Haven, Gideon often plays games with residents. The residents taught Gideon to play the card game pfeffer, which he had never heard of.
“Volunteers are an important asset to Cedar Haven. It’s a big deal when we have someone who is willing to spend their time with our residents. It’s always a good time when Gideon visits and plays games,” said Elli Fuller, administrator at Cedar Haven.
While Gideon’s course is now over, he plans to continue to volunteer at Cedar Haven on a weekly basis.
