Hope residents benefit from art projects

TLHA December 4, 2017

Around a half a dozen Hope residents gathered to work together on an art project. A large sheet of white paper covered the table as the group began to paint a fall tree. Upon its completion, the art was used to decorate the Hope activity room.  But its purpose was for more than just décor.

“After hanging it up, the residents have colored leaves so now we have falling leaves on the tree.” explained Deb Wirt, Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator at Hope. “It is crafts, but it’s much more than that. It’s a sensory project and they are learning about the seasons. We try to use tactile things where they are using their senses and abilities to do something.”

This is only one of several art projects that Hope Residence Therapeutic Recreation Assistants Char and Bryn have designed for Hope residents. Other art projects include making centerpieces with different colored rice and painting with apples or shaving cream. They also make smaller projects residents can display in their rooms or on their doors. Hope residents are proud of  their work on group art projects.

“Sometimes if I haven’t been a part of the group, when I come in the morning residents often show me the new artwork and point out their part,” Deb said.

One of the best aspects of the art projects is that everyone can be involved as the projects can be adapted for all skill levels. Hope team members are often involved in making the larger projects.

“It’s such a neat thing that they do and it’s very therapeutic for everyone involved, ” Deb said, “And ultimately, it’s just really fun.”
