Students participate in “Lemonade Wars” to benefit JCM

During the winter months, gifts made to The Lutheran Home Association (TLHA) were matched dollar for dollar due to a match from generous ministry friends.  Many supporters took advantage of the opportunity to see their financial gifts go further to help seniors and individuals with special needs.

BathBombsThat was case when students from St. Paul’s Lutheran School, in Mount Calvary, Wis., selected Jesus Cares Ministries (JCM) to benefit from the school mission offerings. Learning of the match and how their support would double was exciting for the young donors.

JCM supports all ages of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; so it’s wonderful to have donors of all ages.

In addition to their offerings, students from St. Paul participated in a “Lemonade Wars” event to support JCM.  Working in groups of two or three, students selected a product that they were responsible for making and selling. Preschool students sold lemonade while older students opted for more elaborate items.

“A huge variety of items, anything from homemade bath bombs, T-shirts, slime, birdfeeders, baked goods, snow cones, trivets,” explained Kari Pieper, teacher at St. Paul’s.Pokemon

In less than two hours during the “Lemonade Wars” event, the students raised more than $1,200 for JCM. With the match, it became more than $2,400.

When young people learn to financially support organizations like JCM, they become familiar with our ministry. As they grow, they could share the mission of JCM with those who might benefit, become volunteers within the organization or become a lifelong donor.

“Students can enrich their Christian faith while also ensuring that everyone will have access to learning about Jesus in the best way possible for them,” added Pastor Joel Gaertner, VP of Ministry and National Director of JCM.

Connection to JCM

Mount Calvary, home to St. Pauls Lutheran School, is a small town. A large nearby town, less than 15 miles away, is Fond du Lac, Wis. The city of Fond du Lac is very active in the JCM community.

Faith Lutheran Church, The Arc of Fond du Lac and St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Fond du Lac host monthly JCM events. Winnebago Lutheran Academy, a Lutheran high school, carries on a New Friends program to connect teens and young adults in high school and college with special needs children and their families. Many JCM participants reside in one of the group homes in the Fond du Lac area.

St. Paul’s teachers are working to organize a trip to one of the group homes. The hope is to be able to show the students whose lives their gifts are impacting.
