Dispelling myths about Down syndrome
If you have the opportunity to get to know an individual with Down syndrome, you will quickly realize you have met a friend for life. Individuals with Down Syndrome are more like their peers than different.
Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan (DSAWM) notes there is great diversity within the population in terms of personality, intelligence, appearance, sense of humor, learning styles, compassion, compliance and attitude. They have a full range of emotions and attitudes, are creative and imaginative in play, and grow up to live independent lives with varying degrees of support and accommodations. Individuals with Down syndrome establish friendships, interests, hobbies and participate in community activities.
It is important to dispel the myths associated with Down syndrome and recognize that their social and emotional needs are mostly the same as everyone elses. DSAWM has some great information to help:
- MYTH: Adults with Down syndrome are unemployable.
Businesses are seeking adults with Down syndrome for a variety of positions, such as clerical positions, housekeeping and a greeter at the local grocery store. Individuals with Down syndrome bring to their jobs enthusiasm, reliability and dedication.
- MYTH: Individuals with Down Syndrome are always happy.
Individuals with Down syndrome have feelings just like everyone else. They respond to positive expressions of friendship and are hurt and upset by inconsiderate behavior.
- MYTH: Individuals with Down syndrome are stubborn.
An individual with Down syndrome may not be able to tell you how he or she feels. This can lead to the false perception of “stubbornness.” It is important to remember an individual’s behavior is often a form of communication. Be sure to consider all the circumstances.
If you are out in the community and see an individual with Down syndrome, take the time to say hello and ask them how they are doing. Thank them for their hard work and tell them they are doing a great job. Ask them what they enjoy doing when they are not working or where their favorite place to go is. Being accepted is just as important to them as it is to you and me. I guarantee you will get a smile from them that will make your day.
